How to Care for Your Inlay Furniture & Décor
Each inlay piece is uniquely handcrafted, meaning slight variations and small imperfections may be present—these are not flaws but rather a testament to the artistry and individuality of every creation. Bone inlay furniture and décor add timeless beauty to any space, and with proper care, they will remain stunning for years to come.
1. Gentle Cleaning Only
Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to maintain the finish and prevent scratches. For a deeper clean, lightly dampen the cloth with water and dry immediately.
2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Strong cleaning products can damage the delicate inlay and resin. Always use mild, non-abrasive cleaners when necessary. Avoid surface cleaners, glass cleaners, or any harsh chemicals, as they can degrade the finish over time.
3. Protect from Heat and Moisture
Bone inlay furniture is sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. Always use coasters, placemats, or protective layers under hot or wet items to prevent damage.
4. Handle with Care
The intricate craftsmanship makes these pieces both exquisite and delicate. Avoid placing heavy or sharp objects on the surface to prevent cracks or chips.
5. Keep Away from Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the inlay’s colours to fade or the bone pieces to develop a slightly yellow tone over time. While limited sunlight can help maintain a bright appearance, extreme heat and direct sun exposure should be avoided.
6. Consider Adding a Sealant
Bone and mother-of-pearl inlay furniture have a naturally porous surface, so sealing is recommended for high-use items like coffee tables. A grout or polyurethane sealant (such as Cabot’s Clear Polyurethane Varnish) can be applied for added protection.
- We recommend applying the sealant with a soft cloth in a circular motion, rather than using a brush, to prevent visible brush strokes.
- If you’d like your piece sealed before dispatch, we offer this service for an additional cost of approximately $200, depending on the size of the item.
7. High-Use Items & Maintenance Tips
- For frequently used pieces such as trays or drawers, natural expansion and contraction of materials may cause small bone pieces to loosen over time, especially with seasonal temperature changes. If this happens, a small amount of all-fix or super glue can be used for an easy at-home repair.
- Our inlay vases are not fully waterproof. We recommend using a liner or a separate vessel inside the vase to protect it from water damage.
Unpacking Your Inlay Furniture
Due to their handmade nature and weight, our inlay products are carefully bubble-wrapped, packaged, and bolted within a crate to ensure safe transit. Since items may be moved multiple times during shipping and customs clearance, we take extra precautions to prevent damage.
