A coastal escape; the pandemic makes us re-evaluate the importance of home.

A coastal escape; the pandemic makes us re-evaluate the importance of home.

When the world is shut, or it's just simply too hard to navigate, a lot of us have been throwing ourselves into home projects. Be it renovations, cosmetic improvements, or even coastal properties that we can escape to. Effortless neutral tones, lots of texture and a relaxed, cosy style all spring to mind when creating the ultimate beachy getaway. We have all spent so much more time at home in the past few years and we are all embracing the idea of turning our house into a home.

I love the use of linen for couches, throws and scatter cushions. Think earthy green tones, light rusts for a pop of colour, creams, greys and whites. Create texture and depth with different materials, and we can add our own personal story through photographs, art and objects we have collected through travel - from our favourite stores and from friends. I personally love adding books on coffee tables, bedsides and even dining tables in stacks. Timbers work so well, and a timeless classic piece like our Bone Inlay Stripe Side Table in White will fit the brief and add the ‘wow’ factor to any room. I find this piece so versatile and easy to work into most aesthetics, and it adds to the layering of a home that makes it feel considered and welcoming.

When considering a coastal property I love to use customers' existing items and I generally choose inlay pieces and colours that will stand the test of time, as opposed to current colour trends. The part of the process I enjoy the most is working closely with you to ensure that we fulfill your desired brief perfectly. It’s so important to consider how the home is being used, who is using it and what you are trying to achieve with the decoration. I recently used an Inlay 6-Drawer Chest in a coastal bedroom and the end result was stunning. It was the perfect piece for the room - I’ve included my mood board for you to have a look at. Feel free to let me know what you think, or to get the ball rolling with your own styling. It doesn’t have to be a coastal home! Look forward to hearing from you soon, Jess - Mahlia Interior Stylist X
